• Our hotel's stunning backyard showing the jetty out to the helipad.
• My first glance of a wild sea snake. The water was beautifully clear.
• Our chopper coming in to pick us up - this is the style, baby!
• Looking down from the chopper on the slums. We may have stayed at a fantastic hotel, but not all of Kinabalu is quite so luxurious.
• Jon, our trip director, looking quite surprised that we made it to the base station in one piece.
• Waterfall at the start of the climb, about 1,700m.
• Three quarters of the way to our overnight stop. I felt a lot worse than I look at this point (trust me, it is possible), and it only got harder from here.
• A break in the tree cover shows how much further we have to climb - how demoralising!

• Laban Ratu, our hostel for the Saturday night. A welcome sight after three hours hard climb. At 03:45 the next morning, we were to conquer the slope in the background, although at the point this photo was taken, I felt incapable of conquering the steps to my room.
• We came from somewhere down there. There is a path, honest...
• Laban Ratu is at 3,200m. Nearing sunset, looking down on the clouds provides a stunning vista.
• Sunset over the clouds.
• This close to the equator, the day comes to a close at almost precisely 19:00 every day of the year. On this particular day, we were ready for bed shortly after.
• A couple of chocolate bars, a few energy drinks, and a hearty meal brought the smile back to my face, but the strength in my legs was gone for good.
