Skiing in New Zealand

9 Aug 2007
Skiing in New Zealand. We stayed in Queenstown and visited three snow fields - Treble Cone, The Remarkables (which were somewhat unremarkable), and Cardrona - for a total of nine days skiing. We also squeezed in a helicopter flight to the top of a glacier, an accidental overnight stay in Christchurch, and some of the group went sky diving as well!

  • The results of a very well run barbeque..
  • The house even came with a jacuzzi - how good is that? :)
  • Freaking out the locals.
  • With a little bit of this...
  • The flight out of Queenstown was cancelled due to low cloud, and we had to take a seven hour coach ride to Christchurch instead. Hence, we missed our connection and had to spend the night in Christchurch and get the flight out 24 hours later. So we had a little time to look round in the morning. This is Christchurch Cathedral (built 1864-1904).
  • Next to the Cathedral, the Citizens' War Memorial sculpted by William Trethewey (1937).
  • The Antarctic explorer, Robert Falcon Scott, sculpted from Carrara marble by his wife Kathleen in 1917.
  • The Kate Sheppard National Memorial sculpted by Margriet Windhausen. Unveiled on 19 September 1993 to commemorate New Zealand being the first self-governing country in the world to grant women the right to vote.
  • The Bridge of Rememberance (1924).
  • The white timber Victorian Gothic Church of S. Michael's (1872) is notable for it's detached belfry (1860) and the finest collection of Victorian and Edwardian stained glass in Christchurch.
  • This is a Woka Hua, a traditional Maori vessel used to contain the "Hua". At the Church of S. Michael's, it is used to contain the sacrement and is lowered during mass.
  • Ron Davis is a dyslexic artist whose clever street art attempts to show people his view of the world.
  • This jester marks the entrance to the Court Theatre.
  • Sadly, I had not enough time to take the tram tour, which is meant to be quite informative.
