Skiing in New Zealand

9 Aug 2007
Skiing in New Zealand. We stayed in Queenstown and visited three snow fields - Treble Cone, The Remarkables (which were somewhat unremarkable), and Cardrona - for a total of nine days skiing. We also squeezed in a helicopter flight to the top of a glacier, an accidental overnight stay in Christchurch, and some of the group went sky diving as well!

  • We had to drive to each snow field from Queenstown (between 30 mins and 1.5hrs drive) and had a little walk up to the slopes from the car parks.
  • Skiing into a sea of cloud.
  • My new sunglasses, the waiting for delivery of which very nearly cost me my flight out of Singapore.
  • Stunning panoramic vistas.
  • A Rai-ndeer hunting chairlifts with its antlers.
  • Skiing when you have no hope of seeing where you're going is actually quite good fun. There were two days like this, which made for fantastic snow.
  • A couple of Keas: <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/animals/features/132index.shtml" target="_new">"Prepare to be astonished by the kea, a parrot whose intelligence can be compared to that of the higher apes."</a>. You can see the intelligence in their cheeky manners.
  • Our chopper landed on top of a glacier in the middle of a remote mountain range.
  • Totally unspoilt snow at the top of the glacier.
  • Riding in the backseat of the chopper.
  • Tolkien country.
  • Not me!
  • This was the view of Queenstown from our house.
  • And this was the view of the main part of Queenstown in the other direction.
  • Our house for ten days.
